You can tell if your card is compatible by examining the edge connector. If there is only one "slot" in the PCI edge connector, it is the older style 5 volt-only card. Upgrade to the newer IgniterX card.

Additional Technical Information

Disk Performance and the Mac OS X 10.3 Journaled File System

Mac OS X 10.3 incorporates a journaled file system, which will automatically log any file modifications. If your computer crashes badly enough to require a restart (or a restart from a power failure), the OS will then use the journal to aid in fixing any disk problems caused by the crash. Because any write to the disk will also incur a journal update, this will slightly slow down disk performance.

Mac OS X 10.3 ships with journaling on by default. Digidesign recommends that customers format their media drives with journaling turned off. If you are using Apple's Disk Utility program to format drives, choose "Mac OS Extended" format, instead of "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

If you wish to turn off journaling on your boot drive as well, perform the following steps:
1. Run the Apple Disk Utility
2. In the main window, select the boot volume
3. From the File menu, choose "Disable Journaling"

Note that this will slow recovery if your system has to be rebooted to recover from a kernel panic or power failure.

Important: Energy Saver Settings for Power Mac G5
For optimal Pro Tools performance, you must set Processor Performance (located in System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options) to Highest.

Apple's Mac OS help documentation provides the following info on Energy Saver Processor settings:
* The PowerPC G5 processor in your Power Mac G5 can run at various speeds. The default setting for this feature is "Automatic", which allows the system to run the processor at full speed when required, and at a lower speed during periods of light processing activity. Certain real-time applications, such as audio creation or gaming, may perform optimally when us-ing the highest processor performance setting. You can change the processor performance setting in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences.

G5 Limitations

Apple's Power Mac G5 computers include a technical change to PCI card support which renders some Digidesign and third-party PCI cards incompatible.
Some Digidesign & Third-Party PCI Cards Cannot be Supported
The G5's PCI slots accommodate 3.3 volt-powered PCI cards only, compared to the G4's PCI slots which supported mixed voltage cards (5.0 V, 12 V, or 3.3 V). While some of Digidesign's PCI cards are compatible with both 5.0 V or 3.3 V PCI slots, others require 5.0 V-capable PCI slots and will be physically incompatible with Apple's new Power Mac G5.

G5 / Protools Limitations .
While the G5 1.8 GHz and Dual 2.0 GHz models have PCI-X slots, and the G5 1.6 GHz model has PCI (and not PCI-X) slots, all Power Mac G5s support 3.3 V PCI cards only. MIX Core, MIX Farm, and all Pro Tools|HD cards are 3.3 volt-powered PCI cards which comply with the G5 PCI specifications. In addition to incorrect voltage, 5.0 volt PCI cards will not fit in the PCI slots on any G5 models. The affected Digidesign PCI cards are as follows:

Digidesign PCI Cards Incompatible with Power Mac G5
* Digi 001
* Pro Tools|24 system cards, in Pro Tools|24 or Pro Tools|24 MIX systems:
d24 (core card on Pro Tools|24 systems)
DSP Farm
* Pro Tools|24 MIX system card:
MIX I/O (Note: this is different than the MIX Core and MIX Farm cards. See MIX I/O Overview)
* Audiomedia III (Toolbox)
* Pro Tools Project PCI
* Project II
* Disk I/O (Pro Tools III Core card)
* SampleCell II
* SCSI-64 Kit (included ATTO Express PCI-DC card is not compatible)

Third-Party PCI Cards Incompatible with Power Mac G5

* Aurora Igniter, IgniterRT, and IgniterLT (manufactured before Spring 2003)

Older versions of the Igniter, IgniterRT, and IgniterLT card are not electronically or physically compatible with the Power Mac G5, as they are 5 volt-only cards. You can tell if your card is compatible by examining the edge connector. If there is only one "slot" in the PCI edge connector, it is the older style 5 volt-only card. Upgrade to the newer IgniterX card,

Hardware Exchanges to Pro Tools|HD Systems

Many TDM cards and peripherals can be exchanged for Pro Tools|HD and HD Accel system components. Pricing and other details are available in the Protools Hardware Exchanges .
