Il DV40 offre la conversione interna dei file da 4 tracce a Stereo, o da Multitraccia a Mono; l'editing dei file consente operazioni non distruttive come il Copy, il Paste, l'Insert, il Cut e l'Erase. Il disco DVD-RAM può essere formattato in due modi diversi: Normal (non-distruttivo) e Tape (distruttivo). I file vengono creati con le funzioni "New file" o "Insert". I dati registrati in modalità Normal dispongono della funzione di "Undo" 'Time Jump', supportata dai riferimenti di tempo e data. Il modo di registrazione "Tape" offre la sicurezza istantanea sui dati registrati, proteggendoli immediatamente per prevenire tagli o cancellazioni accidentali. E' possibile inoltre, per backup o archiviazione (Disc mode), installare a bordo del DV40 un hard disk opzionale su cui è possibile duplicare tutti i dati registrati. Mentre gli Audio files sono duplicabili on board senza l'ausilio di HD. Lo strumento offre già a bordo una vasta gamma di ingressi ed uscite che comprendono:

E' inclusa la sincronizzazione per segnali Word Clock e Video ed un completo generatore di Time Code che permette i modi: 24H RUN, REC RUN, FREE RUN e EXT RUN ed inoltre è implementato anche il nuovo modo 23.97F HD. L'interfaccia utente estremamente semplice consente di richiamare le funzioni basate sul formato BWF e dei gruppi di Play List create memorizzando i punti di "Cue". Possono inoltre essere semplicemente attivate le funzioni di "Direct location" ai punti di memoria interna oppure ai punti di LAST REC START/END e LAST PLAY START.
Il DV40 permette lo "Scrubbing" usando il Jog/Shuttle di alta precisione di cui è dotato; sul pannello posteriore è situata una presa per collegare una tastiera ASCII 2, per inserire agevolmente nomi di file, locazioni di TC ecc. La stessa funzione può essere comunque svolta dalla tastierina alfanumerica situata sempre sul pannello frontale.

Una scheda opzionale Ethernet permette il trasferimento di file dal DV40 ad un computer (via FTP applications) , inoltre tramite apposito software di prossima uscita, sarà possibile la gestione grafica dei file direttamente su un monitor VGA, editando le forme d'onda direttamente con il mouse.

The Fostex DV40 Master Recorder is designed to record and playback audio data directly onto a DVD-RAM disc. The unit offers high reliability recording by employing a Verify/Write mode, which examines all recording data, all the time, while in the record mode. The DV40 employs the UDF (Universal Disc Format) file format mode that establishes file compatibility between Computer based Work Stations. The user can choose either SDII (Sound Designer II) or BWF (Broadcast Wave Format) (.WAV) as the desired audio file format and also choose either 24 bit or 16 bit resolution.
Recording track modes can be selected from MONO, STEREO, or MULTI (4trk). Various sampling frequencies can be chosen: 44.1 / 48 / 88.2 / 96 / 176.4 / 192kHz and 0.1% pull up/down can be applied to any chosen rate.Optional HD installation required for 88.2 & 96kHz/4tr and 176.4 & 196kHz recording.

The DV40 offers internal file conversion between 4track or STEREO files and Multitrack mono files. File editing modes offer non-destructive edit functions such as Copy, Paste, Insert, Cut and Erase. You can choose between 2 recording modes: "New file" and "Insert". The recorded data in the Insert mode offers Time Jump, UNDO functions supported by time and date. The other mode available is Tape mode (destructive mode), which offers data security for accidental power cut, i.e., previous recording is secured up to the point where power loss occurs. For back up and archiving a Disc duplicate mode is available by installing an optional HD, while Audio file duplicate modes are possible on board (no hard drive necessary.) The DV40 offers a comprehensive choice of built in I/O options, which include:

Two Digital AES/EBU I/O's.

Synchronization with Word and Video signals, full Time Code generator functions (which offer 24H RUN, REC RUN, FREE RUN and EXT RUN modes) are included. The TC generator is also equipped for the new 23.97F HD camera mode as well. The user-friendly machine-operator interface offers Cue point write and recall functions based on BWF format and Play List group, list play using stored Cue points. You can also choose Direct locating to internal memory points and her locate functions including LASTREC START/END points and LAST PLAY START point.
The DV40 offers analog audio scrubbing by using high precision/ tracking JOG/ Shuttle encoder dial. There is also a back panel port to interface to an ASCII 2 keyboard for inputting file names, TC locations, etc.

An Optional Ethernet card will offer audio file transfer between the DV40 and a targeted PC via general-purpose FTP applications. With future software revisions and the installation of an VGA I/F card, the DV40 will offer file management on VGA monitor screen, waveform editing by P/S 2 mouse and DVD-AUDIO reproduction.
